Our First Day of Travel

It seems like a long time ago since we took the drive to England with Kayla. Well, let's see what I remember. We drove way out of our way to go to the Solway Firth in Wigtown. This is where the two Margarets were tied to stakes and drowned in the tidal waters because they attended secret religious meetings.

As a family, we have often read their story in the book Trial and Triumph: stories from church history by Richard M. Hannula. It has often been our desire to visit this site. As we sat around the monument, we sang Psalm 25. The book states, "As the rising tide swirled higher around young Margaret she began to sing a song from Psalm 25."

After singing the Psalm Margaret's hands were freed and she was allowed to hold a Bible. She read aloud from Romans 8. Some still tried to get her to recant but "there she died for her love for Christ and her desire to follow His Word".

The year was 1685, known as the killing times in Scotland. The water is said to have moved since that time so the monument is now in the marsh.

This is the gravestone of one of the Margarets.

As John did some further church history study in the cemetery the kids did their own thing.

Wigtown is a lovely town where there is a large monument dedicated to the martyrs.

As we travelled on we saw these 7 deer.

John stopped at the church where Samuel Rutherford ministered.

In the evening we were able to visit some of the remains of Hadrian's Wall.

Hadrian's Wall was a Roman frontier built in the years AD 122-30.
